If you are looking for a GREAT program to work with GIS data and to make professional maps take a look at GIS Manifold.  Also there is a great user group you can get help from.  Also Cornell University has prepared a 124 page document comparing Manifold System 6.00 to ESRI's ArcGIS 8 and how to do several common task Right Click Here and select "Save Target as"  Keep in mind this file is over 4 MBs.
